As Jane's post points out, how many of us really notice when and how we are learning. It happens constantly, yet we often don't recognize those moments nor do we share our findings with others. If I really think about what I have learned already today, the list is kind of interesting considering I've only been up for 3 hours.
- wind speed hit 80km/hr over night
- child thinks she can block parents from her computer use by adding password to her account
- parent discovers how to remove same password
- reasons for Ron Wilson being let go from Leafs
- drawing is fun
- you don't have to draw well to get your point across
- there are many sites on the web to find out how many words you can make from a set of scrambled letters
- Torontosun.com does not appear to be loading today
- one of the fights on UFC last night was scored incorrectly and a rematch will be needed
- Trader Joes seems to be a place I need to shop
- in 1934 a pair of socks cost 9cents
- the town tax dept is closed on Saturdays
That's quite a list, it's quite random and jumps around, but also is a great chronicle of the day so far.
The question then to be asked is Did I recognize what I was learning when I was learning it? No. Did I share all the items I learned with anyone? No. Did I share any of the items? Yes. Which ones did I chose to share and why?
Often my moments of "WOW I need to share this" only come when the item really astounds me. The item/result truly was unexpected or I know it will make someone else's life (usually work life) easier. So why don't I share the other items? Why do we only share the WOWs?
I suppose for me it's because I'm often joked at for having "interesting but useless facts" floating around in my head. So why share them all, but the point to take away, is that what interests you will surely interest at least one other person. Someone has shared an item with me, I have learned from it, I REALLY should share that item too and pass on the learning. If we truly think about it this is the way all knowledge has passed through the generations, by sharing. If the shared stopped much of the learning would as well.
Jane's post calls for us to realize those learning moments and be much more fully aware of them. I commented on her post that I am taking this thinking forward to my team. I initially said that I want to challenge them to track all of their learning moments for a month, but now that I have written what I learned in 3 hours....that might be a huge task.
Instead this will be the challenge I put forward to them and myself and I hope you may as well.
Try to keep track of everything you learn in one week, which of those items do you share? At the end of the week I'd like them to reflect on why did you choose to share those only specific learnings, why do you keep the others to yourself?
I'm curious and excited to see the results of this experiment and would love to see other readers results next Saturday (March 10th).
Happy learning.

Interesting post Tracy. I responded to a question similar to this on a LinkedIn group and have been thinking a lot about why we don't describe things as learning. I love watching natural history programmes on TV and I learn so much and yet if somebody asked me afterwards how I had spent my evening I would probably say I watched TV, I wouldn't have said that I had spent the evening learning. The same thing applies to many of the things that we do in our everyday lives. When we visit old country houses or other historical sites, even museums and galleries, even although we have probably actually learned a lot, its unlikely when asked, we would say that we spent our time learning.
The only exception I can think of in my personal life, is the research I have been doing on my family tree. Whilst it is research, I immediately associate it with learning. When people ask me about it, my first response is....I have learned so much not only about my family, but the social conditions that surrounded them. I have no idea why I describe what is essentially a personal interest as learning..but I do :-)
