#devlearn - How to create a successful mobile learning strategy - Clark Quinn (notes taken pm)

"what partner's do we need?"

  • Fundamental (the people you need, IT, stakeholders) (security)
  • Strategic (the people that are there to help because they make sense, vendors, politics)

 For me:

  • Those that create buyin within an organization
  • Security personal
  • IT
  • Senior team
  • Policy makers
  • Hr - for equity
  • Legal team
  • Diversity and inclusivity
  • Vendors
  • End users (participatory designers)
  • Support teams (anticipating problems that you can't)
  • Corporate communication

"issues you need policies to address"

  • Devices you will and wont support
  • Platforms you support
  • Viruses
  • Support provided
  • Time when it can can't be supported
  • Service costs, data access
  • Purchasing of devices hardware, Reimbursement policies
  • Ettiquette
  • Global issues, language, services, images
  • Info access
  • Intillectual
  • Personal info
  • Compliance
  • Info security, authication
  • Digital rights management
  • Accessibility
  • Branding, consistency
  • Discovery when using interal and personal devices

W3C - has a working group for accessibility and mobile learning. Both are similar in how they work for the user.

RESOURCES

  • money
  • Time
  • People, designers, developers,
  • Content, words, audio, images,
  • Software, compression software, tracking, LMS
  • Production
  • Devices
  • Tracking services, software, reimbursement, time
  • Translators
  • Testers evaluation, testing, tweaking,
  • Trainers
  • Support, users, creators, they all need tools
  • Project management (timelines might be different, Devices change, development times)
  • Mobile enabled management
  • Continual skilling of the team
  •

SUPORTS NEEDED

- the performers

- the devices (how do i get it, it broke, software not working,) make it look like stuff they already know.

- the team.

GOVERANCE

  • templates
  • Standardized - quicker to migrate from area to area
  • Product life cycle - off the market as well as archiving requirements
  • Training cycles earlier than later
  • Metrics, evaluation standards
  • Yearly updating
  • Regional updating
  • Unionized vs non
  • Corp and biz sign off
  • Solution governance
  • Blends
  • Schedule alignment
  • Go/no go

WHAT DO WE MEASURE

  • Bandwidth limits
  • Time saving (learning, developing, designing)
  • Accessing the tool
  • Measure the experience, do they go back once because it's good, or bad
  • Is there a difference between one device and other
  • Mobile environment itself, is it meeting the needs. Are people accessing because it is easy or are they jumping to the paper version
  • Is the user getting the info they want.  How much do they need?
  • Measuring the deployment of the device
  • Unique users
  • Are they using it vs changing performance
  • If they are creating their own job aids (something's not working well)
  • Impact of training should go up
  • Completion rates - yes and ... some mobile is only for on the fly training

 Anything you do develop,....

Ou should have a measure to say YES LET'S KEEP IT, NOT QUITE WORKING TWEAK IT, KILL THE PROJECT.

The percentage where you go or stay with projects should changes as you go along as well to the point you either keep or kill.

BARRIERS

From Elearning Guild report. (biggest to least)

  • Integrating with enterprise tools
  • Security
  • Lack of standard
  • Content for other devices does not translate
  • Cost
  • Bandwidth
  • Management resists
  • Screens to small

Culture eats strategy for breakfast. You need a culture that is experimental, innovative, and want to try and grow.

HBR article. March 2008 by Garvin, Edmunsin, & Gino

Custom content delivered to be specific to where you are and what you are doing. This will be where we will and should be going. Example Yelp restaurant discovery app. (augmenting reality + learning).

Mobile in the workplace should not only be about training. It should be about:

Some mobile solutions might be more about connecting you to the people you need to speak to to work in complex problems and solutions. Formal solutions. Performance support.

MOBILE LEARNING - eLearning Tour Part 1 - Hosted by Corporate Learning Trends and Innovation

One of the hardest things to find are real-life examples of different kinds of eLearning solutions. On May 21, Learn Trends will be hosting a free online
event where the people who have developed interesting eLearning solutions will
demonstrate and briefly discuss what they've done.

Moderators:

Judy Brown - Mobile Learning Solutions
Bob Mosher - Performance Support Tools
Karl Kapp - Games and Simulations
Tony Karrer - Self-Paced eLearning Solutions

Demonstrations will showcase a variety of different kinds of eLearning. We hope they will vary from practical solutions to common problems to leading edge solutions.

Mobile Learning
Everyone should begin to think about mobile learning, not as a replacement, but as an extra choice for the learner.

Many people seem to think that mobile learning is elearning lite, but it is much more than that and there is some much more that can be done with it. This will be our primary device for connectivity in the years to come.

Ideas:
  • field guide
  • alerts
  • geo-blogging
  • survey
  • audio recordings
  • on-demand access
  • reporting
  • reference
  • simulation
  • conferencing
  • job aid
  • check list
  • decision support
  • polls
  • assignments
  • presentations
  • quiz
  • just-in-time
  • feedback
  • note taking
  • test
  • reminders
  • updates
  • game-based learning
  • augment reality
  • transcription
  • geo-exploration
  • procedures
  • coaching/mentoring
  • translation
  • capture/share/document

Podcasting

Try a two-person/interview-style podcast. You can even use a computer generated voice (text to speak technology) to ask you the questions you want to answer yourself within the interview.

http://mlearnopedia.com & http://cc.mlearnopedia.com

Opportunities

-good for downtime/deadtime we all have as we travel

-don't always have to be made by a real person

-auto generate podcasts with each new story or posting (use latest versions of text to speech TTS)

Abilene Christian University - George Saltsman & Bill Rankin

appx. 5000 students (total)

Gave all first year students iPod phones or touches (their choice).

Reasoning - everything is moving mobile very quickly and student value mobility. Looking for something that they could do a variety of things with, need low power resources, and could be used easily during personal downtime.

Started by creating a video and a day in the life. How would everything look differently if every student had an iPod. (VIDEO www.acu.edu/connected)

Portal m.acu.edu (doesn't work as well on Internet explore, but well on Safari & Macs)

Has news, events, campus maps (buildings & maps) {built whole campus in Google 3d}, guide about campus, then my mobile - classes, campus balances -meals, books, etc, files can be sent to students or classes, grades, polling of students)

Also have a live word cloud tool (using the polling) - from the web. Attendance.

Goals:

  • Increase student learning
  • Increase student engagement
  • Increase university awarement
  • Advance undergraduate enrollment (and faculty)
  • foster a culture of innovation on campus

2/3rds selected phones 1/3rd selected touch (usually because too difficult to switch out of current contracts)

Positives students believe

  • increase in their grade, attention, involvement, interest
  • increased active learning, contact with professor and teacher, overall class experience

Faculty feedback

  • success
  • communication
  • easy
  • regularly

is generally happy of performance (not yet perfected).

Not based on a particular device, but more so what they are offering on the device. Brings the info to them instead of having to find it. Situational learning.

What does it require?

  • space for lots of data
  • redesign campus facilities for mobility & collaboration
  • infrastructure for synchronous and asynchronous access by all
  • infrastructure for creation and participation by all
  • etc.

Tools & Technologies for Mobile Learning - eLearning Guild Online Forum

Tools and Technologies for Mobile Learning by David Metcalf, University of Central Florida (notes from the eLearning Guild's online forum)

What is mlearning?

  • laptop, micro pc
  • cell phone
  • tablet pc
  • player
  • PDA/handheld
  • Ebook reader
  • game device

Wiki - seeking lesson in small, manageable formats that can undertake when it suits them.

No consistent answer as it is still developing, growing, being explored.

Polls of participants
experience with m-learning projects - most haven't started
delivery are you using - most using podcasting
devices you are targeting -most were using ipods, blaceberries, smartphones/pda, cell phones,

Why consider it?
2 billion handsets by end of 2006
40M multimedia phones in US, 279 digital tv phones in US by 2010
More than 100 billion handsets with touch screens
3.25 billion mobile phones use

First Building Blocks
Learning

Second Building Block - performance support
- on the job
- task specific
- support at time of need
- coaching, mentoring
- paper based job aides

Need a consistent base of knowledge base
- repository of knowledge
- sharing of best practices & lessons learned
- connect with experts

A learner knows what they need to know - they just need to find the information.

Example - sports theme learning, sent through phone. Lesson is about a math course. Questions scored as a game. More points, they can win ring tones, prizes, sporting even tickets. (MySportsPulse). Using Moving Knowledge.

Example (Tyco)
Using vXML - book on tape style learning. For customer service management instructions.

One could also use a specialized device. ( Ie: PocketPC Symbol). Videos can be downloaded directly to the device. Best to use closeup shots. Can record messages.

Overall this was a fairly good presentation. I was one of several in the session having trouble with audio and video files during the presentation. Another issue for myself it felt very business oriented. Not entirely, but that is a strong focus I find often of the mobile teaching. They speak of on the job tools, training as you need it, performance support. However, it generally seems related to sales. There is a huge world out there that needs more training then customer service. I'm in the health care industry and at a facility that has a great deal of RN students....how great for them to have a bedside "companion" with them to reference a wound for proper treatment, medication references for dosages (these greatly exist in the mobile world I realize). I'm not sure where we are going with this as an organization yet, but this session wasn't quite what I was thinking of, although there we a ton of useful sites, tools, and info for me to go explore. Great job again by the Guild.

Mobile Knowledge for Social Change

A great new (or recently new) wiki was passed on to me today for collecting ides on how to use mobile technology, elearning, communications to better the global community. It is fairly new in that not a lot of additions have been created on the wiki, but there is great room for growth an opportunity for those of us using and exploring this means to educating. Several of the current editions to the wiki include health care applications. There are items on communications in rural areas, mobile banking, and environmental conservation.

At the least take a look and maybe it will intrigue you to sign up to the community. Your contributions could greatly help out others in the field.

ShareIdeas.org is an online community and a wiki for sharing ideas on how to use mobile communications for social and environmental benefits. ShareIdeas.org was created with support from Nokia and Vodafone, but belongs to the growing global network of individuals and organizations that use this virtual gathering place to
communicate - and collaborate.
The idea for ShareIdeas.org came from Ndidi Nwuneli, founder and CEO of LEAP Africa, a Nigerian NGO dedicated to nurturing a new generation of African leaders.
"Groups like ours would really benefit from a resource that shows us how to use mobile technology to carry out our work more effectively," said Ndidi at a Nokia stakeholder event of NGO and corporate leaders. ShareIdeas.org was created in response to Ndidi’s request.
